Acme Toy Company

At least three unrelated American firms traded under the Acme name in the early 20th century. The best-documented is Acme Toy Manufacturing Company of New York, which produced composition-head dolls and novelty toys from the early 1900s into the 1930s. Company records are sparse, and many toys sold as Acme are attributed on mould style rather than documentation.

"Acme" was among the most heavily reused names in American manufacturing, and at least three unrelated toy firms traded under it in the first half of the twentieth century. The best-documented is Acme Toy Manufacturing Company of New York, which produced composition-head dolls and novelty toys from the early 1900s into the 1930s, competing in the same low-to-middle price bracket as Ideal and Effanbee.

Company records are sparse and much of what circulates in the collector market is attributed on the strength of a mould style or a box fragment rather than documentation. The firm did not survive the Depression-era consolidation of the American doll trade, and its tooling and trade name appear to have been dispersed rather than sold as a going concern.
