Founding
Founded in Freeport, Illinois as the Novelty Iron Works by E.H. Morgan and his brother Charles, initially casting coffee mills, cherry stoners and other household hardware.
History of Arcade Manufacturing Company
Arcade made cast-iron household goods for decades before toys became its main business, and it approached toys as an extension of pattern-making rather than as a novelty line. The commercial breakthrough came in 1921, when the company licensed the Yellow Cab Company's livery and produced a cast-iron Yellow Cab in exact colours and markings. It sold in enormous numbers and established the model that carried the firm: buy the licence, copy the real vehicle, and advertise the result under the slogan "They Look Real".
Arcade went on to hold licences from McCormick-Deering and International Harvester for farm equipment, from Ford, from Buick, from Greyhound and from Chester Gump and Andy Gump for comic-strip subjects. The farm toys in particular established the pattern of dealer-distributed scale agricultural models that Ertl would later build an entire company on.
Cast iron did not survive the war. Scrap-metal drives consumed the raw material, wartime restrictions stopped production, and pressed steel and plastic had taken the market by the time it was possible to restart. Rockwell Manufacturing bought Arcade in 1946 for its industrial capability, and the toy line ended there.
