History of Bandai
Bandai's first international reputation came from tinplate. Through the 1950s and 1960s it produced friction and battery-operated cars for export that were unusually accurate for the medium — recognisable Jaguars, Buicks, Volkswagens, Mercedes and Cadillacs, often at large scale with lithographed chrome, opening features and genuine proportional fidelity. Where much Japanese tin of the period was cheerfully approximate, Bandai's cars were trying to be models.
The pivot that made Bandai a global company came in 1980, when it acquired the licence to make plastic model kits of the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series. Gunpla — Gundam plastic models — became a hobby standard in its own right and remains one of the largest model-kit lines in the world. Bandai followed with Tamagotchi in 1996, and held the toy rights to Power Rangers, Digimon, Dragon Ball and much of the Japanese character market.
Bandai merged with Namco in 2005 to form Bandai Namco, and remains one of the largest toy companies in the world. That success has an odd consequence for collectors: a search for "Bandai" returns forty years of modern anime product, and the 1950s tin cars that built the company's name are buried underneath it.
