About Carlisle & Finch
Carlisle & Finch produced what is generally accepted as the first electric toy train sold in America, in 1896 — four years before Lionel. It left the toy trade around 1915 to concentrate on marine searchlights, which it still manufactures in Cincinnati today. Its earliest electric trains are extraordinarily rare.
Founding
Robert S. Finch and Morton Carlisle, two Cincinnati electrical engineers who went into business supplying electrical equipment at the moment domestic electricity was arriving.
History of Carlisle & Finch
Carlisle & Finch has a genuine claim to a first: in 1896 it produced what is generally accepted as the first electric toy train sold in America — a four-wheel streetcar running on a two-rail brass track at what became known as 2-inch gauge, powered from wet cells. This predates Lionel by four years and Ives's electric trains by considerably more.
The company built a substantial line of 2-inch gauge locomotives, streetcars, mining equipment and track through the first decade of the century. But toys were a sideline to a growing electrical business, and around 1915 Carlisle & Finch left the toy trade to concentrate on carbon-arc and later xenon marine searchlights.
That decision looks unsentimental and was entirely correct. Carlisle & Finch is still in business in Cincinnati today, making searchlights for naval and commercial vessels — over 125 years after it built the first American electric toy train.
