History of Gebruder Fleischmann
Fleischmann began in tinplate — clockwork boats and ships above all, and cars in the 1920s and 1930s — and became one of the most respected European model-railway manufacturers of the postwar era. The 1949 move into HO gauge was the decisive one, and by the 1950s Fleischmann was known for mechanical quality: heavy die-cast locomotive bodies, smooth-running motors and a robustness that made its models the default recommendation for a working layout rather than a display shelf.
The Piccolo N-gauge range extended the same approach to the smallest practical scale, and the European prototype coverage — German, Austrian and Swiss outline in particular — gave the company a defined identity against Märklin's three-rail AC system. Fleischmann worked in two-rail DC, which mattered enormously to modellers and defines the two camps of German railway modelling to this day.
The company merged with Roco in 2008 under Modelleisenbahn GmbH, and Fleischmann-branded models continue in production.
