Halsam took its name from its founders' surnames and built its business on hardwood: unit blocks, alphabet blocks, dominoes, checkers and chess sets, and the American Logs construction system that competed directly with Lincoln Logs. The products were plain, accurate and well finished, and they sold steadily for decades because they did not go out of date.
The blocks are the heart of it. Halsam produced embossed and lithographed alphabet and picture blocks in the classic American pattern, and its precision-milled hardwood unit blocks became a standard in nursery schools — a market that valued dimensional accuracy, because blocks that do not stack square are useless in a classroom.
The company was acquired by Playskool in 1962, and the Halsam lines continued under that name; production under the Halsam identity ended in 1971. Halsam is the kind of maker whose products are still commonly found in family attics and are consequently undervalued relative to their quality.
