History of Linemar (Marx Japan)
Linemar was Louis Marx & Company's Japanese operation, and the arrangement explains a great deal about postwar toys. Marx held the American character licences and the American distribution; Japan had the tinplate lithography skill and the labour cost advantage. Linemar-marked toys were made in Japan to Marx's specification and sold through Marx's American channels.
The result is the best Japanese character tinplate ever made. Linemar produced Disney and King Features toys — Mickey, Donald, Pluto, Popeye — as friction vehicles, clockwork figures and battery-operated novelties, and the battery-operated pieces in particular, with their multi-action sequences and cloth-dressed figures, are among the most sought-after toys of the 1950s and 1960s.
Linemar also made tin robots and space toys. The operation wound down in the mid-1960s as Marx's own fortunes changed and as Japanese costs rose, and Linemar-marked toys are consequently confined to a narrow and well-defined fifteen-year window.
