Louis Marx built the world's largest toy company by producing affordable, high-quality toys sold through Sears and Woolworth's. Marx coined 'More Toy for Less Money.' His company produced everything from tin yo-yos, made in the wake of the craze Donald Duncan popularised, to elaborate western playsets to the Big Wheel tricycle.

History of Louis Marx & Company
Marx built the largest toy company in the world on two principles he never abandoned: give the customer more toy for less money, and quality is never compromised. He achieved both by ruthless attention to tooling economics — reusing pressings, sharing lithography, running enormous quantities — and by initially owning no factories at all, buying capacity from firms like Girard until he bought the firms themselves.
The range is almost unmanageably large. Lithographed tin windups and character toys in the 1920s and 1930s; electric trains that undercut Lionel and American Flyer; the great lithographed-tin playsets of the 1950s and 1960s — Fort Apache, Cape Canaveral, Roy Rogers Ranch, Untouchables — with their printed tin buildings and bags of moulded figures; Johnny West and the Best of the West action figures; Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots; the Big Wheel tricycle. Marx also revived the yo-yo as a mass American craze.
Time magazine put Marx on its cover and called him the Toy King. He sold the company to Quaker Oats in 1972; it failed under corporate ownership, was sold on, and ceased American production in 1979 with the tooling scattered. The volume of Marx product made is why so much of it survives, and why condition standards in this market are unforgiving.
