About Sturditoy Corporation
Sturditoy produced large, extremely heavy pressed-steel toys — among the most ruggedly built toys of the era. Their pressed-steel toy dump trucks, tankers, and fire trucks were built large enough for a child to sit on and extremely durable. Pristine Sturditoy trucks are rare and highly collectible.
History of Sturditoy Corporation
Sturditoy made very large pressed-steel trucks for a very short time, and the combination is why the name carries the weight it does among American toy collectors. Operating from Providence, Rhode Island for barely fourteen years, it produced dump trucks, oil tankers, fire engines, buses and army trucks at a scale and gauge that rivalled Buddy L directly.
The trucks are around two feet long, built from heavy steel with substantial cast or steel wheels, and finished in strong single colours with stencilled or decalled lettering. They were expensive, they were sold in relatively small numbers, and they were played with outdoors — which is the combination that produces genuine scarcity.
Sturditoy ended in 1934, a Depression casualty. The consequence is that a good original Sturditoy is one of the more valuable American pressed-steel toys, and that the market has a reproduction and heavily-restored problem to match.
