Taiyo Kogyo was a prolific Japanese producer of battery-operated tin toys and later radio-controlled plastic vehicles. Their battery-operated tin Mystery Action cars (with reversing bump-and-go action) and their 1980s RC cars were popular worldwide.
History of Taiyo Kogyo
Taiyo belongs to the later phase of the Japanese toy industry — the part that made the transition out of tinplate rather than dying with it. Its early output was lithographed tin battery-operated vehicles, and it became particularly associated with "Mystery Action": a bump-and-go mechanism where the toy runs, strikes an obstacle, reverses, turns and continues, usually with lights and sound.
Through the 1970s and 1980s Taiyo moved into radio control, producing toy-grade RC cars, motorcycles and construction vehicles in the same market Nikko occupied, and it supplied a great deal of product to American and European distributors under other brand names.
That combination — tinplate at the start, RC at the end — makes Taiyo a useful illustration of how the Japanese toy trade survived where the German one did not: by moving into the technology that replaced its original product rather than defending it.
