History of Universal International
Universal International was a Hong Kong manufacturing and distribution group that mattered chiefly for what it owned rather than what it originated. In 1987 it acquired Matchbox, having earlier taken on other established die-cast names, and it operated them as brands within a Far East manufacturing structure.
This is the endgame of the die-cast industry's westward-to-eastward shift. Lesney had gone into receivership in 1982; Universal took Matchbox on, moved production to Macau and China, and then sold the brand to Tyco in 1992, from where it eventually reached Mattel.
